Hopefully she wouldn’t get pulled over. That had happened quite a bit in the past, what with the constant road tripping and all. She always got out of it, though. However, her drive over was kind of boring. But it was better than being cooped up inside her apartment. She shuddered at the thought. Addie had not lived in a home of her own since she was 18. It made her feel strange. For most young adults, she supposed having a home of their own meant freedom. For her, it was more of a feeling of containment. The only reason she had chosen to live in the apartment was because she had the money left from her grandmother. The young woman had arranged a rental agreement for a few months with the owner of the building. She figured she might as well put it to some good use and live in a decent place while she was here. Plus, Addie had made another impromptu purchase: a horse. Not her best idea, seeing as the urge to pack up and leave town could strike at any moment. However, she liked Cedar Creek. A lot. Maybe she could make a life for herself here.
Addie drove until she got to the barn. Cedar Creek was a nice facility, despite all the drama that surrounded it. The whole Montgomery/Kingston feud was definitely something she wanted to stay out of. The only thing she was concerned about when it came to the Kingston’s was how well they could look after her horse when she wasn’t there. Cedar Creek, form what she heard, rarely sold any of their horses. Most of them were kept for showing. But this was a boarder’s horse who was unable to afford the upkeep. Addie hadn’t even seen the mare in person. She had been scouring the internet while on the job at the motel for horses for what seemed like hours when she came across a listing for a bay Thoroughbred mare name Abraham’s Daughter, AKA Dot. The blonde didn’t even have to meet the mare to know they were a perfect fit. Over the phone, she worked out a cheap lease agreement for about six months. The only reason it was a lease was because Addie was afraid she’d find something terribly wrong in the small town and have to leave. True, she did like it, but something seemed off. She didn’t want to buy a horse and then jet off. If, in six months, she established a life here, Dot would be hers.
She got out of her car and wandered into the pasture where Dot was being held. Addie didn’t know what the plan was for today. Right now she just wanted to visit with the mare and get to know her a bit better. The large bay wandered over when she saw Addie and rubbed her head on the girls shoulder. ”Hey baby girl!” She grinned as she patted the mare’s shoulder. Addie suddenly felt very optimistic for what the future could hold here for her. Especially with Dot. Her very own horse. It was a good feeling. The blonde patter her mare on the back and turned around, looking at the yard. She wondered if anybody else was here, or if she was alone. Things seemed a bit too quiet at the moment, to her dismay.

Tristan parked the truck and got out. He walked into the Kingston barn and found one of the managers. A horse had gotten itself into some trouble overnight while in the pasture, and as the vet tech it was his job to patch it up. The barn had top notch care, but still had no vet on the property. Maybe I could change that... he thought. Down the first block, past the wash stall to the second block he walked with the attendant. The poor gelding stood in cross ties. His left eye was swollen, and there was a two inch gash above it. Tristan quickly set to cleaning the wound and making sure it was just a surface abrasion, then stitching it closed.
Tristan allowed his thoughts to wander while he worked. This sure is a fancy barn, kind of reminds me of home. I wonder what shows this guy's won in the past, he wondered. After he was finished with the seal brown gelding, he gave the manager the bill and was on his way out when he caught sight of the pastures. "Mind if I take a look around? He asked. The manager shrugged her shoulders and said, "Have at it." At that, Tristan returned his supplies to the truck and walked along the barn, down the chute to the middle pastures. He surveyed the pristine fences and the lush grass.
After a few minutes of quiet, he moved on down to the far pastures. A sleek bay was in the field on the left, running and carrying on. She was gorgeous- and so was her owner. A tall blonde let herself into the gate and waited for the bay mare to approach her. It didn't take long, and Tristan didn't blame the horse. He'd come running, too. The blonde seemed to talk to the mare, and patted her on the shoulder. She looked around, probably wondering if anyone else was here, and seemingly missed his presence.
Tristan wandered farther up the chute and let himself into the pasture. He walked around to the side of the blonde and offered a hand for the mare to smell. "Pretty bay you've got. Straight legs, thick barrel, and my personal favorite, and intelligent face. Not to mention those delicate eyes," he said.

A bit of dust flew up and she frowned, noting that the mare needed a bit of a good grooming. She didn't quite know where to do that; she'd only been in the barn, very briefly, once. It hadn't even been with one the owners, so she wasn't shown around or anything. That was on her to do list: know the in and outs of the barn she would be spending most of her time in. Addie breathed in, taking in her surroundings. It had been a while since she'd spent her time in a really small town like this. Small cities were the most easy to spot along the highway, so that's where she spent a good portion of her time on the road. But Addie liked this for a change. A sleepy small town was a nice change of pace.
The blonde was lost in her thoughts when she heard footsteps approaching. She looked up to see that she was no longer alone, at least in human company. A really, really tall guy was now standing next to her, offering his hand to Dot. The mare reached out and sniffed, then stepped a little closer. By the way he talked she could only assume he was in some sort of equine business. Maybe a vet? "Thanks! She is gorgeous, isn't she? But she's not mine. Not yet, at least." Addie grinned at him and stepped a bit closer to shake his hand. "I'm Addie by the way. Addie Hastings. Do you work here?" she asked him, looking up. She felt so incredibly short right now. She didn't think she'd ever been around anyone that tall before. And he was incredibly good looking. That was a plus.

Dust was still flying in the air from where the pretty blonde had ruffled the mare's mane. "Not yet? Ah, you must be leasing," he said. She introduced herself and that jump-started his slacking manners. "My apologies, Miss Addie. I'm Tristan. Tristan Thomas. Please to meet you." He offered a hand to shake. While the girl paid attention to the mare, Tris took the opportunity to get a good look at her. Tall and slender, she had long wavy blonde hair that begged him to run his fingers through it. Blue eyes, with a heart shaped face. Man, I sound like a chick. he thought miserably.
Tristan decided to spark some conversation. "I'm new around here, looking for some work. I'm a vet tech. Might stay awhile. Cedar Creek's nice," he said. When she replied, he noted that she didn't really look like Jess, not near as much as he'd first thought. From behind, they could be twins. This close, however, Addie was a couple inches taller, and her eyes were more expressive. Tristan would never forget how empty Jess looked the last time he saw her, in that mangled car. It's something you can't ever erase. The pain and guilt never go away, even if they aren't apparent on the surface.
"I like horses, but I don't really ride. Not many are willing to carry someone my size, and if its done improperly it can hurt their backs. It kinda sucks, but there isn't much I can do about it. I guess I mostly stick to the companion animals as pets." He continued until he abruptly realized he was rambling to make up for his earlier silence.

"Yup. Just to see how it all works out. I don't know if I'll be sticking around so I didn't wanna make any commitments." The blonde shrugged and patted Dot again. "Oh, this is Dot by the way! How rude of me not to introduce her." she joked as the mare bent down to sniff at the grass, which was clearly more interesting to her at the moment.
Addie shook his hand back, smiling. She noted that his handshake was firm. Her grandma had always told her that was a good thing to take note of when you met someone. She was convinced it was indicative of the type of person you were meeting. Something told Addie her grandmother would have approved, were she still alive. "Nice to meet you, too, Tristan." That wasn't a name she'd come across often. She liked it, though.
"Ah, I see. I'm in the same boat. I was just passing through, or so I thought. I've been here about two weeks but I really like Cedar Creek, so I may stick around." Addie said, looking around at the grounds. It suddenly struck her that this was the fanciest farm she'd ever stepped foot on. It topped her grandma's by far. The fact that the whole town seemed to revolve around the equestrian business was a plus, too. It seemed like the perfect fit for her, but she was hesitant. Settling down right now would be strange for her, but she'd have to do it sometime.
When Tristan said he didn't really ride because of his height, she frowned. "Man, that sucks. I can't imagine not being able to ride. But you are really tall, so it's understandable." she joked a bit. Hopefully he wasn't one of those people who was sensitive about their height. "But companion animals are absolutely better than nothing. Dogs are great. I mean, I don't have one, but I like them." You're rambling. Stop it. she thought to herself. She always seemed to rattle off when she met new people. Couldn't help it.
Addie leaned against the fence and looked up at Tristan again. "So, where are you from?" Addie asked, genuinely curious.

Addie confirmed that she was leasing the mare, and confided that it was because she wasn't sure she was staying. I hope she stays. With me would be nice, too, he thought. The blonde shrugged her indifference and then introduced the mare as 'Dot.' "How appropriate," Tristan replied. "She has a dot-shaped star on her forehead." He smiled at the not-so-much-a-coincidence. "
She returned his handshake with a gentle but firm grip. He noted that she was not afraid of him, or his giant stature. This observation pleased him greatly. The blonde spoke of her assessment of Cedar Creek, and her thoughts of staying and his conscious did a happy dance in his mind.
He enjoyed her displeasure at his inability to ride, and liked her approach to it- joking a little. When she said she liked companion animals too, he jumped. "I have a dog. You can play with her sometime. Her name is Jetta. She's a Husky. She loves people and playtime." he informed her. "They are her favorite things in the world. Well, besides food," he conceded. After a minute, Addie asked him where he came from.
"That's kind of a vague question. Do you mean where did I just move from, or where did I grow up?" he asked. "Nevermind, I'll just answer both," Tristan continued with a smile. "I just moved from Ohio. I went back to the college I graduated from and they got me a local job. But Ohio weather sucks. I had to leave, at least for a little while. I headed south and ended up here." He paused for a breath, smiled at the pretty blonde, and continued on.
"I grew up in Lawrence, Kansas. My parents owned a huge ranch there- more than 25,000 acres. I don't know how they managed it, but they did. Money was never an issue for them. I roamed with the cattle and the horses, and they became my best friends. That's why I chose to be a vet. I wanted to help them as much as I could." He finished. Tristan didn't think his history was very interesting, but then again he found others fascinating.
"What about you? Where did you come from?" He asked Addie.

I didn't really make the connection before, sad as it may be. Makes sense now!" Addie giggled and ruffled Dot's forelock, rubbing the little dot on her head. She momentarily had the mares interest but it was lost again when she eyed a patch of grass and dropped her head back down.
The blonde grinned at his excitement. "Really? She sounds awesome. I'll definitely have to take you up on that offer." Addie had never had a dog of her own. That was next on her list of things to do: own a dog. Not any time soon, though. For now, she supposed Tristan's dog would suffice. That is if he didn't mind her hanging around. She hoped he wouldn't.
Addie nodded and then lifted herself onto the fence to listen to Tristan speak. She loved learning about other people. Especially if they seemed to be as nice as the man in front of her. So, he was from Ohio but was raised in Kansas. "I've been to both states. I liked Kansas a bit more. Can't quite place it, there's just something I really like about it. And that's really impressive about the farm! It must have been nice growing up with that there."
She paused a moment to run her hands through her hair before telling Tristan about her. "Well, I come from a lot of places, I guess you could say. I'm a bit of a drifter. I was born in Virginia, but my parents died a little while after that so I was sent to live with my grandma in Northern California." She didn't bother telling Tristan her mom was probably still alive somewhere. She wasn't worth the time. "She lived near a small farm, nothing much but it was enough to get me hooked." she smiled then, pointing to Dot as evidence of her lifelong infatuation. "My grandma passed away about six years ago and since there was really nothing for me in Cali anymore, I hit the road. And I've been going ever since. It may seem bad for someone my age, but I do love travelling and going from place to place, meeting new people. I do have to settle down at some point, though!" Addie added the last part jokingly. She really couldn't keep going forever like this, it just wasn't possible. "Sorry. I tend to ramble a lot. You'll hear much rambling from me. Hopefully you can get used to it." Addie said apologetically.

Why do I have to be such a sucker for blondes? Tristan wondered not unkindly. Addie was adorable when she played with Dot. He wished she'd ruffle his hair like she did the mare's, even though she'd almost have to stand on her tippy-toes to do so. He made a fool of himself rambling about his dog, yet she finds it fun, as made obvious by the large grin spread across her face. "I look forward to when you do take me up on it. I'm pretty much free whenever." He smiled at her. Not like I mind your company, he thought silently.
Addie expressed her preference for Kansas over Ohio. "I agree. Kansas is the same as Ohio- rolling fields, animals galore, except the weather is normal. Ohio's weather is more temperamental than a stud in a barn of mares. One second its sunny and the next its pouring down rain. One day its eighty degrees out and the next its dropped to twenty." Tris sighed. Ohio was not his friend at all. "Oh, the farm? Yeah I guess it is impressive. It's all I've really known so for me its normal. If you're ever in Lawrence, I'll show you around," he offered.
Addie told him about her early life. She spoke with indifference about her parents, so he didn't feel too terrible, but still offering sympathy. However, when she made it to her grandma, she spoke with reverence. "Ah, she got you hooked. Grandmas are good at that," he smiled. When she told him that her grandmother had passed, he put a hand on her shoulder. "I'm sorry about your Grandma. She sounds like a wonderful person." The girl continued.
"I don't blame you for roaming. Everyone needs to find a place in this world. Somewhere they feel like they belong. I'm still trying to figure it out." Tristan confided.
"I do have to settle down at some point, though!" Addie said. He wasn't sure if it was some sort of hint or not. Then she apologized for rambling. "I wouldn't mind getting used to it." Tristan said with a smile.

Now she was definitely looking forward to visiting. Tristan was really nice. And he was the first person she'd actually taken the time to know here. Not bad for her first try. "Cool! I'm free whenever too. Except sometimes I get stuck doing the late night and early morning shifts at that crummy motel on the edge of town. I'm the desk clerk there, so if you ever need to spend a night, let me know." she joked. In truth, the old motel kind of freaked her out. Most of the time she was alone and half the lights weren't working. Plus, it just looked like the kind of place a serial killer would spend his nights. She shuddered. "That was a joke. Don't ever spend the night there. It's kinda freaky." she made a face. But as creepy as the place was, it was an easy enough job. Plus it was money in her pocket.
Addie thought for a minute about her parents. Her father she could care less about. From what she knew he was an abusive drunk- no respect there at all. Her mother was supposedly a floozy who ran off, but who could blame her? Often times the girl thought about her mother, who could very well be alive with a new family somewhere else. But it really didn't bother her too much. Maybe someday it would be good to find her, but for now Addie was content with the occasional thought. When Tristan put his hand on her shoulder, she offered a smile and looked up at him. "Thanks, that's sweet. She was quite the personality, that's for sure." Addie laughed a little, thinking about her. There was hardly ever a time her grandma ever left her bored.
When Tristan made the offer about Lawrence, she smiled. "That would be awesome! In case you couldn't tell, I'm a bit of a travel junkie. I love going new places. Obviously, or I wouldn't have been at it for this long." Realizing what she said earlier could be misconstrued, Addie paused for a moment. Settling down was a must. The blonde also realized that settling down physically would also probably include being in a relationship with someone. Which she'd never really had before. She glanced at Tristan and wondered if he was seeing someone. She opened her mouth and was about to ask when something told her no. That was a bit personal, she didn't wanna screw things up. Instead she agreed with him and spoke again. "Right! I'm glad we're in the same boat. It seems like most people in this town have their whole lives figured out. I've never been like that. Hence my crappy job as a desk clerk." she chuckled.

Addie echoed his sentiment about free time and he was in heaven. I finally made a friend in this place! he thought silently. She even offered to get him a deal at the local motel. While that seemed shady, he knew she meant well. Then she mentioned that it was freaky. "Aw, is Addie scary of the ghosties?" He taunted playfully. Beating his chest caveman-style he continued, "Me Tristan. Tristan protect pretty girl from things that go bump in the night!" Then he laughed enthusiastically.
Tristan took another moment to observe his new friend, this time trying to see past the physical aspects to more important things. She was obviously a kind person, and pretty open at that. Everyone had secrets though, and he didn't have a clue what hers might be. Not one to pry, lest prying eyes be turned on him, Tristan let that thought float away with the wind. I wonder if she's got a boyfriend? If not, he definitely wouldn't mind changing that fact.
"So, have you heard anything about what's going on in town?" he questioned. "I guess there was a murder. Haven't heard any more than that, though." Tristan wasn't sure if he really cared what was going on, but if he intended to stay in Cedar Creek for any amount of time it would probably be a good idea. He thought about meeting Addie, and wondered if they had any sort of future ahead of them. It didn't work with Jess, but maybe he was supposed to have a second chance.
A chance to not take the keys from her. A chance to pull over and sleep it off. A chance to make better decisions to begin with. He didn't even get to propose. That little blue box sits on his dresser as a constant reminder of what he didn't do. He didn't protect her like he should have. Like a good man would. Maybe that's an archaic sentiment, but its one that Tristan lives by. If he can't keep his significant other safe, then he can't do anything.
Tristan looked back to Addie's face and awaited her response.

"I can't lie! It's creepy there at night. Especially when you're by yourself. I can't believe the owner stuck me with working the crappiest hours. It really is supposed to be haunted." The blonde wrinkled her nose. Yeah, that guy was sketchy too. A sketchy owner for a sketchy motel. They went hand in hand. She laughed at his caveman joke before realizing that Tristan had called her pretty. She could feel herself blush and looked at the ground. Oh, boy. Her blushing always gave her up. "Thanks! Good to know you can keep me safe. You never know what kinda trouble I'll get myself into over there." she half joked. Having someone keep her company at night would be awesome. Especially if that someone were Tristan. She'd feel a lot better about working her crappy job, that's for sure.
She listened to his question about the murder. "Ugh, yeah. It's crazy, right? I mean this is the kinda stuff you see on TV, not live in real life. I'm gonna try my best to stay out of it, because it seems to be a bit of a... driving force in this town. Where the loyalties lie, I mean. I just hope I can mind my own business while I'm keeping Dot here with the Kingston's. Supposedly it happened right in that barn over there." Addie said with a shudder. The thought that someone had taken their last breaths in that barn before having their life ended was more than unsettling. She just hoped that the whole murder thing was a one time only event. She didn't know how she'd handle the farm being a crime scene... again.
"So, my advice would to just take the road less traveled and stay out of it. Like I said, it's crazy with all the feuding and crap. I can't believe people who aren't even involved in the situation caused such a fuss about it. I only know all this because of the chatty waiter at the diner." Addie chuckled. In fact, the Kingston's had not once mentioned the murder to her, neither had any of the staff. She supposed they had been told to keep it all hush-hush, but that wouldn't work long, Addie guessed.

Tristan chuckled at her admission. And the fact that she blushed was adorable. "It can't be that bad. But I'd be happy to check it out for you. How is it haunted?" he asked. "And Addie, I'll always keep you safe. No matter what. It's part of who I am." The giant of a man admitted this softly, almost under his breath. The tone was becoming much too serious for him.
"It is crazy. It was the stable hand that died, right? And Mr. Montgomery is the only suspect?" he wondered aloud. "That is hard to believe, with a place like this. And doesn't he own the rescue? Why would he be over here? None of it makes sense to me. I plan to stay as far away from it as humanly possible." All of this came out in time. The thought of someone intentionally taking another's life made fury bloom deep inside of Tristan.
As large as he is, Tristan is a gentle person. He could never imagine harming a living being, unless it was in the defense of someone else. If it was himself, he would block punches, but he would never return one. His mother always called him Big Bad John, in reference to the song by Jimmy Dean. The song is about a mountain of a man, a miner, who is working when one of the support beams in the mine falls. John holds it up until the last miner escapes, and his muscles finally give out, unintentionally sacrificing himself for the others. Tristan hated the nickname, and refuses to answer to it.
"So, if you work the midnight shift, what do you do during your free time?" he asked the pretty blonde.

"Well, my predecessor, if that's what you wanna call the creep, told me some dude was killed there about 30 years ago. Oh so comforting. Just what I want to think of when I'm chillin' in there alone." she paused for a moment, thinking of when the previous desk clerk had told her the story. Thinking he was just being a jerk and trying to freak her out, Addie had Googled it because she would not be dealing with any bullshit. Turns out it was true. Of all things, a desk clerk had been stabbed by a drifter.
I'll always keep you safe. No matter what. It's part of who I am. Well, if she wasn't red in the face before she surely was now. Addie couldn't remember anybody saying anything like that to her before, let alone someone she had just met. But it was comforting, and really sweet. She smiled broadly. "Wow, that's really sweet. Thank you." The blonde didn't know what else to say. But she liked the fact that Tristan was so open and honest. That was always a good thing.
"Yeah, the stablehand was killed. I don't see how it makes any sense either; Mr. Montgomery seems like he's got way too much at stake to go about killing some guy willy-nilly over an ancient feud. It's kind of sad, though. Even if he really didn't do it, his life won't ever be the same because of the investigation." Addie said, thinking. She couldn't imagine being accused of something like murder when you didn't do it. Especially if you were a high authority figure- people would never be able to look at you the same way. It was a shame, indeed.
"Hmm, free time... Well, I come over here as much as I can. Or I'm over in my apartment on the west side of town. I was actually looking into getting another job, possibly here. Not that I need it, it's just because I have a lot of downtime and since I don't have any friends yet-" Addie paused, realizing she was talking to a new friend now. "Well, minus you, of course-" she smiled t him before continuing. "I figured doing something else part time would be a good thing for me. So I'm on the lookout. What about you? Being a vet tech must be a pretty busy job." Addie stated, looking back at Tristan.

"That is really odd. Maybe you should smudge it with some sage to get rid of any negative energy," Tristan suggested. He would help any way he could. Not like he had anything else to do in this town but work. "And make sure you stay safe. Take extra precautions. Do they have any safety policies put in place to prevent it from happening again?" he questioned. Just the thought of another murder makes the hair on my arms stand up, he thought.
Maybe Addie is supposed to be his second chance. He could redeem himself. He meant what he said. Anything he can do to protect her, he will. Anything to keep her safe. Doing anything less would destroy him, plain and simple. Apparently, this embarrassed the pretty blonde, because a vibrant blush bloomed on her cheeks even as she expressed her gratitude.
"It does seem to be quite a mystery. But then again I think its always like that in a small town. Nobody wants to rat out the person they grew up across the street from." He said. This prompted him to think about the life-long effects the case could have on Mr. Montgomery. Also, on himself. Tristan may not have suffered much in legal consequences, but he would always punish himself.
Addie informed him that she didn't have much to do except work. "Well now that we are friends," he paused and smiled, "You can call me anytime you want. I can bring Jetta and we can go to the park. Or maybe you and I could catch the cliched dinner and a movie?" he suggested.
"Oh, well you'd think I'd be up to my ears with work, but that's not the case. That's a good thing for the horses, not so much for me. Means I have too much free time. Being new around here no one really knows how to get a hold of me. " he explained.

"Wow, you really know your stuff! I might try it, definitely keeping it in mind." she smiled, thinking of what would happen if her boss or a guest came in and saw her doing that. Hilarity would ensue, that was for sure."Hm, I'm guessing Mace won't cut it?" Addie half joked. Honestly, she always kept a knife in the desk drawer. God forbid she'd ever have to stab anybody. And a neighbor of her grandma's had tried teaching her how to shoot once. That hadn't worked out too well. Addie wasn't that big of a fan of shooting too much, anyway. "Hmph. Their safety precautions are a bit of a joke. Having one staff member on hand is hardly safe. Especially if it's just little old me there. But, if worse comes to worse, I can always stab them with a letter opener. Or whip out my mace" another half joke. Addie made a face and shook her head. Up until now she really hadn't thought about how unsafe her job could be.
"True. I can't imagine growing up in a community like this. I mean, people are so close with each other. I never had that. I think it would be kind of weird, to be honest. Out of my comfort zone, having all my neighbors knowing nearly every detail of my life." the blonde laughed. At least if she decided to stay here, at this point in her life people couldn't get too nosy. They could try, but they'd never be able to know her as well as they knew each other. And that was just how she liked it.
She felt a wide grin cross her face at his offer. "I'd like that. If you have a business card I can take it and then put you on speed dial!" she joked. Well, Addie would probably end up putting Tristan on speed dial. Friends had that privilege. Especially if they were like him. "Both ideas sound great to me." she smiled again. Was he asking her out? She hoped so. Or maybe he was just being friendly. Either way, it would be nice just to go out and be in his company.
"Ah, I see. Well that certainly is good for the horses. But people do need to know you exist. I'm sure in no time at all you'll get business just by word of mouth. In a small town like this that's the best form of advertising. Plus, it helps that you're super nice and helpful. People always like that." she smiled at Tristan again and glanced at Dot. "So will the horses." she laughed.
