ETC.: keith is a very kind guy. silly, affectionate, and passionate about the things he loves. he likes to goof of with his friends, always telling jokes and bouncing around like he's a little kid. he always seems to be full on energy, always wanting to go do something new or make friends with new people. he's good at keeping things a secret, too, because he's had to keep the abuse going on at home a secret for so long. but he doesn't like to talk or think about that. instead, he tries to focus on the happy things in life, like music and babies and fluffy little animals... and cute guys, but that's also a secret because he's not quite ready to come out of the closet just yet. it's quite stressful, especially added onto everything else he already has to deal with. his whole family, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, everyone, are all homophobic. one of his greatest fears is to be beaten up or killed because of his sexuality so he keeps it a secret the best he can. when he's alone with his thoughts and not surrounded by others, he gets lonely and sad, wanting to badly just to have a cute guy to snuggle with. he writes some of his best - and saddest - songs when he's in this mood, but of course he changes all the "hims" to "hers" so no one suspects a thing.

HISTORY: keith was born and raised in toms river, new jersey. it was not a happy family that he was born into, either. his father was an alcoholic as well as physically abusive, toward him and toward his mother. to deal with the abuse, mary would degrade her son, calling him names and kicking him when he was already down. not a day went by when the woman wouldn't scream at him that she didn't love him, tell him that he was worthless, and that he would never amount to anything. keith tried not to pay too much attention to what she said, usually just standing there and letting her say whatever she wanted to say. he knew that if he tried to fight back in any way, andrew would come after him with either his hands or whatever object he happened to be holding in them at the time. it was a violent, hostile environment that he grew up in, one he never thought he was ever going to escape, but to his surprise, in seventh grade, he made a friend. his best friend.
he and this boy would frequently sneak out at night. his friend didn't have any reason to leave his house, his life was pretty much perfect - lots of money, loving family, and a little sister, too - but he hated seeing keith hurt so he insisted on going out at night; to the park, to the lake, anywhere! they were pretty much inseparable. his friend's family accepted keith with open arms. they knew, or at least, kind of knew, about the abuse he was suffering from but never prodded for more. they just let keith know that their house was open to him whenever he needed a break from his own life at home.
keith's life got a little easier after meeting his friend but of course, this is no fairy tale and it doesn't have a happy ending. at least not yet. in his junior year in high school, keith's father came home one night too drunk to function. well, he could function enough to beat his son, worse than ever before. keith ended up in a coma, one that lasted for three months. the first thing he heard when he woke up was "i don't want a faggot for a son, stop hanging out with that boy or i'll kill you."
insisting that he wasn't gay, keith promised never to see his friend again. finishing up his junior year at home, barely passing, keith transferred to another school, his heart broken, shattered into a million pieces. he tried to keep in contact with his friend, to let him know what was going on, but his father forced keith to change his phone number, wouldn't let him answer the house phone, and andrew checked the mail before letting keith read anything - including emails!
it was only after graduating from high school that keith could finally get away. packing just enough clothes to get him through a week, bringing along his trusty guitar as well, he left the town he'd grown up in with hardly any money in his pockets. he left a note in his friend's mailbox but didn't have the courage to speak to him face to face. a few days later, he ended up here.
