Her green eyes scanned the small group of people who had gathered in the coffee shop. An older couple sat in the corner, exchanging words quietly. In the other corner, a group of three girls sat in sharp contrast to the other couple, loudly laughing and joking around. Then there were the few people scattered about doing work or reading a book. There wasn't a single person there that Charlie knew. But she wasn't surprised. She'd only met a handful of people and most of those people weren't even really friends, just people she'd come across and had simple conversations with. The brunette sighed, and, realizing how strange she must have looked at the door, walked up to the counter and ordered a caramel latte. She picked her seat and plopped down in an aged leather booth in the furthest corner of the room. The little shop was nicely decorated for Christmas, with a big tree decorated to the nines in the corner and garland strung around the room. It was quite homey, and Charlie rather enjoyed it. A worker came up to her with her coffee and set it down on the table. "Thank you." She flashed the girl a smile and watched her walk away. The brunette took a sip of her coffee and smiled. She warmed up immediately. This was only her second time at Midnight Oil but it was already one of her favorite places. It would be even nicer if she had someone to enjoy it with, but for now, she supposed being alone would have to do. screaming out a love song |

Ryder Wolff
Parking his hunter green Chevy S-10 a little ways down the road, Ryder stepped out of the cab and then looked to Niaux. “If you’re going to come with me, you’ll have to stay outside.” The blue merle Aussie yipped and tilted his head as he looked at his master, then he jumped from the truck’s bed and looked up at his master. Ryder smiled and rubbed the dog’s head. “You’re a stubborn dog aren’t you Niaux?” The Aussie barked loudly and then he followed his master to the door of the Midnight Oil Coffeehouse where the dog lay down, his forepaws crossed under the nearby bench.
Smiling, Ryder squatted before him. “Be a good boy okay?” In answer the Aussie yawned and lay his head on his paws and then Ryder stepped into the coffeehouse and breathed in the strong scent of coffee and sweet treats. Approaching the counter, Ryder sat upon a stool and ordered himself a Mocha and a sweet roll and then smiled as he waited for them and looked around the quaint little coffee shop, there was an elderly couple, sharing quiet words, a loud group of girls in a booth a little ways away from the elderly pair and a girl, sitting alone in an old booth in the far corner. Then there were a few other couples and soon he heard a voice, Here you are sir. Ryder smiled and turned to look at the barista. “Thank you.” He flashed her a smile and received one back and then his blue eyes travelled back to the lone woman in the far corner. He tilted his head a little and then collecting his Mocha and his sweet roll and moved to a table near hers and then as he listened to the soft music as it drifted over him and then he started eating and then his thoughts went to the dog lying outside and the horses back at the barn. He made a mental note to get them each a treat to take back with him. He wanted to speak to the young woman in the far booth, but wasn’t sure how to do it…yet.

Charlie wasn't exactly bored, just slipping off into la-la land. Her thoughts ran back to arriving here just a short time ago at the news of her grandfathers death. She hadn't been surprised, but it still stung. What did surprise her was inheriting the farm. She supposed that would go to her mother simply because of the fact that she'd been his daughter. But nope. It had come to Charlie, a city girl who rightly didn't know how to manage a farm. But here she was, doing that and managing the antique store. She still couldn't believe it. While her grandfather's death had been a blow, she was grateful for the new life he'd given her. She liked Nashville, but she loved Cedar Creek. It was a breath of fresh air to her. Of course, she hadn't been there long so she wasn't too wrapped up in the murder or other small town scandals that had occurred. Unless you counted an angry ex wife accusing her of ruining a marriage. Yikes.
Her green eyes instinctively lifted at the sound of the door opening. Her thoughts were brought back to the present as a man walked in. Charlie gazed out the window and saw a dog sitting outside patiently and felt a smile on her face. She loved dogs almost as much as she loved horses. Getting one was her next priority, she just needed to find time to get it. The brunette sat back in her chair and stared out the window a bit longer before someone came and sat at the nearby table. It was the man who just walked in, and she could only assume the dog was his. Not really one to start conversation but unable to resist asking about the dog, she spoke up."Would that by any chance be your dog?" She inquired, hoping he was the kinda guy who liked random conversation. I mean, most people in small towns did, right? Or at least that's the way it seemed in the movies. Charlie took a sip of her latte and waited for a response, hoping for a friendly conversation to get going. screaming out a love song |

As he sat in the coffeehouse he saw Niaux sit up and move a little and then yawn and look in the window a moment. A half smile claimed his lips as he took a bite of his sweet roll and then sipped at his Mocha and then, his mind turned back to trying to figure out how to talk to the pretty brunette in the far booth. It turned out he wouldn’t have to figure it out after all, a gentle voice came his way from where else but the booth in which the woman sat.
Would that by any chance be your dog? Smiling, he set his Mocha down on the table and met her eyes as he answered. “Yup. That’s Niaux, he’s a blue merle Australian Shepard. I’m Ryder by the way, Ryder Wolff.” He said with another smile as he glanced at the window once more and as if he knew his name was spoken, the ice blue eyes of Niaux roved the coffeehouse and fell upon his master at his table and a soft bark slipped from his jaws as the dog’s tongue lolled a little out of his mouth. Ryder laughed a little as he returned his gaze to the woman again as he waited for her response.

Not my best but I wanted to get a reply in before I hit the road! Glancing at the dog again, Charlie was reminded of a family Christmas eons ago at her other grandfather's house. They used to have a dog like-Niaux? Cool name. "He's adorable. And well behaved."Charlie gestured to the window with a grin. She'd only ever had one dog her whole life, a scrappy little terrier who had to be given away because he liked to pee in the house. It had been cats from there on out. The brunette grinned at him as he introduced himself. "Pleased to meet you. I'm Charlotte West- you can call me Charlie, though." She could count on one hand the amount of people she'd introduced herself to. What a shame. But here she was branching out, at least a bit. She paused for a moment before offering him a smile. "If you're alone you can come and sit here, if you'd like." She offered, suddenly feeling a bit chatty. But you couldn't blame her. This was exciting! Slowly but surely she was making new friends. Hopefully he didn't think she was a complete weirdo by offering the empty seat to a random stranger. Charlie was just looking for some company- what was the use of two people sitting by themselves when they could talk to each other? screaming out a love song |

Ryder smiled as he listened to the young woman speak He's adorable. And well behaved. Pleased to meet you. I'm Charlotte West- you can call me Charlie, though. If you're alone you can come and sit here, if you'd like. Smiling at her compliment, his blue eyes drifted to the window a moment as he watched his dog. Then, collecting his Mocha and the remainder of his cinnamon bun he moved to her table and answered her, “Thanks Charlie, I adopted him as a puppy just after coming to Cedar Creek. Have you ever had dogs Charlie? Oh and friends call me Ry.”
Ryder told her as he sipped his Mocha and then flashed Charlie a winning smile. He hadn’t made too many friends since he’d arrived in Cedar Creek, he’d been focusing on working with both Niaux and Steel, that stallion had been a bit hyperactive since they’d gotten acquainted and become partners. He saw Niaux yawn and then lay down once more. Ry couldn’t quite get over the fact of how funny his Niaux could be. He shook his head a little and sipped his Mocha once more waiting for Charlie to speak again. He was starting to want to make friends, it was always helpful to have friends.

Cool. He doesn't think I'm being creepy. Maybe people around here are just friendlier. she mused as she took another sip of her drink. She grinned back at him. "Must be nice. I've only ever had one dog and he peed on everything, so... you can guess how that went!" Charlie chuckled, thinking back to the little brown dog. He had not been a favorite of her fathers, but Charlie had liked him well enough. She'd been sort of sad when they'd given him away."I'm looking for one now, though. I've got the room for one, now, unlike my old place." Charlie said, feeling excited at the prospect of her own dog. Her own place in the country. This was still all new and exciting to her, despite her being alone. She could make a life for herself here, if she worked hard enough at it.
"So, have you been here long? One of those folks who've been here their whole life?" The brunette asked, taking another sip of her drink and glancing up at Ryder. She'd come across plenty of those. This was a close knit community, and she liked to think that was the reason she wasn't fitting in. Well, part of it, anyway. Charlie knew she was being a bit withdrawn, but she was still trying to cope with the move and her grandfathers death. While being out here was a pleasant change for her, it was a drastic one and the young woman sometimes found herself struggling with being alone here. screaming out a love song |

Ry smiled as he watched her drag her purse out of his way as he sat with her then he smiled as she spoke, Must be nice. I've only ever had one dog and he peed on everything, so...you can guess how that went! As he sipped from his Mocha he nodded, he knew exactly how that went then Charlie was speaking again, I'm looking for one now, though. I've got the room for one, now, unlike my old place. Sipping again he smiled and nodded as he spoke, “That must have been upsetting, watching your pet given away because of a bad habit…” he paused a moment before continuing again.
“…and space is the biggest thing aside from personality when it comes to getting a dog. I’m debating whether I want to get another one myself, a friend for Niaux, poor guy, he’s been pretty lonesome with just me and my stud Steel for friendship. And he doesn’t always get the chance to hang out with us, I do occasionally take him with us on rides though, that Niaux loves.” Then he fell silent with a soft chuckle as Charlie spoke again, So, have you been here long? One of those folks who've been here their whole life? He took a sip of his Mocha and was silent a moment before he answered.
“Actually I’ve only been here for six years, I was born in London. Moved here at nineteen to go to college, got my Associate’s Degree, now, I’m just trying to publish a book and good ol’ Cedar Creek is just the place to relax and write.” He told her as he smiled and finished his Mocha and ordered a second one. This was the most he had spoken to anyone since he’d been in Cedar Creek and he smiled, thanking the waitress as she set down his next Mocha he took a sip and spoke again, “Perhaps we can introduce you to Niaux quick, he’s quite friendly.” He said with a chuckle as he spied the dog’s face in the window again as he looked back at Charlie.

"Yeah, it was kinda sad. My father didn't have the patience to correct the habit, sad as that sounds." The brunette frowned before taking another sip of coffee. Her father had never really had any patience when she thought about it. His work consumed most of his life and when he was at home he expected things to go smoothly. Unfortunately that was never the case, as no family was perfect, no matter how much Mr. West had wanted his to be.
"Oh, I've got the space now, thank God. I don't ever intend to live in a tiny apartment again." She paused for a beat before continuing. "Companionship would be nice, I'm sure. And you ride? Same here! Well, I guess a lot of people here do." The brunette joked. This was prime equestrian country. Of course people rode. If you lived here and didn't have a horse, you were looked at as different. She kind of loved that. It made her feel right at home.
"Ah, should have figured. The accent! But I've been surprised at the ton of different people I've come across here. It's kind of ridiculous." Charlie tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and paused again before continuing. "Ooh, and author. Impressive. This is definitely the place to write though, it's perfect. Picturesque, like right out of a painting." She realized then that this was the sort of place she'd dreamed of living in while stuck inside her family apartment as a child. She smiled. and laughed when she saw the dog peering in. "Ah, yes. I'd love to meet him." Charlie stood and waited for Ryder to get up, her eyes on the dog whose face was still pressed against the window.

Sipping his Mocha, Ry nodded as Charlie spoke. Yeah, it was kinda sad. My father didn't have the patience to correct the habit, sad as that sounds. Ry shook his head a little, how could anyone be like that? Another sip of his Mocha and Charlie’s voice entered his ears again, Oh, I've got the space now, thank God. I don't ever intend to live in a tiny apartment again. Companionship would be nice, I'm sure. And you ride? Same here! Well, I guess a lot of people here do. Ryder chuckled as he spoke to Charlie a half smile climbing to his lips as he did so.
“I tend to agree with you there Charlie, just having a horse and a man as friends is not quite the dogs’ idea of Companionship. I do ride, Steel is a purebred Tennessee Walker, his ancestors go all the way back to the original TWH, but I rarely mention that to anyone.†Another sip of Mocha and Charlie was speaking again and Ry tilted his head a little and smiled, Ah, should have figured. The accent! But I've been surprised at the ton of different people I've come across here. It's kind of ridiculous. Ryder laughed a little and sipped his Mocha again as Charlie spoke.
Ooh, and author. Impressive. This is definitely the place to write though, it's perfect. Picturesque, like right out of a painting. Ah, yes. I'd love to meet him. Ryder smiled as she stood and was not too far behind. “Thank you Charlotte, it really is. C’mon.†Ryder said as he headed to the door and then stepped out onto the porch before the quaint little Coffeehouse. Niaux sat up and his pale blue eyes fell upon Ryder and he barked happily, his forepaws up on Ry’s stomach. Making sure Charlie was close by Ryder spoke to the dog “I have someone that wants to meet you Niaux. Be nice to her, no jumping up on her okay?†Niaux yipped and sat calmly before his master as his eyes travelled to the woman behind his master waiting for the next step. Ry smiled and looked back at Charlie. “This is Niaux Charlotte.†Ry said with a smile as he leaned against the rail.
