Dakoda had come to the barn early that morning. It was about five o' clock. The ground outside still had dew on it and the sun was just starting to peek it's head up over the horizon.
She opened the big barn door and walked inside. Her boots made an empty clunking sound that aroused the horses in their stalls. Their eyes looked as though they too had just woken up. She walked straight over to her stallions' stalls. Morning boys! she said to them. Her voice was teeming with happiness, she was always happy when she got to be with her horses. She looked inside their stalls, without going in them and saw that they hadn't been fed which was normal. The barn here took good care of the horses that boarded here but, they didn't feed them until later in the morning and Dakoda's boys were used to eating breakfast early. She liked to have them fed very early because she wanted to have most of the day today for training them. Of course she was only a stablehand at the moment and had other things to do as well but, she still could get a few hours of training in before she needed to do other things.
She walked down to the feed room and brought back the bucket with Bear's food in it. Bear was a beautiful chestut arabian horse with as much training as a wild horse. But, Dakoda saw great things in the young horse's future. She dumped the bucket of food into the feeding bucket in the corner of the stall, she didn't go inside for this either. The chestnut stallion began munching on the food that he was given. Dakoda walked back to the feed room and brought out Charlie's food. Charlie was a brown quarter horse who had a star and a blaze on his face. Charlie was much calmer and had a bit more training than Bear but, still not good enough to be ridden yet. Dakoda planned for him to be a barrel racing horse. He had the smarts and the tenacity to do it.
She watched her boys eat for a moment before giving Charlie a little pat on the neck. He didn't respond. She walked over to Bear's stall which was right next to Charlie's and she patted him as well. But, she got a much different reaction. He swung his head around and pinned his ears flat back and beared his teeth to her. He made it very clear that he did not want to be touched. She backed away slowly from the stallion for her own protection. It would take a long time before this boy calmed down but, Dakoda was certain that she could do it.
She walked away and grabbed halters for both of the boys. Today was training day one for both of them and it was late in the game too. Charlie was already three years old and Bear was two and a half. They should have been trained to a halter as foals but of course, that hadn't happened. She had read things about waiting in a pasture for the horse to come near her but, her boys were stalled for a reason, the could not be caught and she wasn't risking them being outside all day.
She hung the halters in their stalls, to let them smell it and get used to it ebfore strapping it to their faces. She assumed that it would need to stay there for the next day or two. The last thing she wanted was to scare them with the halters because if that happened there would be no way that she was ever going to be able to get one on either of them, especially Bear. She sat on a chair that she had pulled up. It was just a lawn chair that had been sitting by one of the rings. She knew she would be here with them for at least two hours before needing to work and didn't want to stand all that long. Another reason for doing this was to get them more used to her. She had been the only one feeding them but, that wasn't getting her anywhere. She felt as though Charlie trusted her a tiny teeny bit but, nothing more than that. Both stallions would need at least a year of training before she could start training them for the diciplines that she had chosen for them. Bear for jumping and dressage and Charlie for barrel racing. She sat and looked at her beautiful horses eat the rest of their breakfast and slowly sniff the halters she had left their for them.

JJ MASSAT
She’d been up almost all night working on the finishing touches of the painting she’d started while she’d been camping. Rubbing her kitten’s head, JJ looked at the time and stood, stretching out cramped muscles she sighed. “I’ll be back later tonight Ghost…watch the house for me?” The kitten meowed as he twitched his black-striped tail a little. JJ laughed at him and then slipped into her barn clothes, a black tee shirt a pair of dark blue jeans and an old pair of her mother’s cowboy boots, shined back to an almost new black leather. Then she pulled her platinum blonde hair back into a braid and scrutinized her appearance.
Satisfied that she would turn a few heads, JJ left her apartment and stepped outside, the sun had just risen over the horizon. It was warm this morning and a bit humid, heralding a storm in the next few days or so she thought. Stretching again, JJ turned and headed toward the Cedar Creek barns where she had both Eagle and Raina boarded. She’d taken the pair out on her camping trip and knew that both had been pretty happy with the trip. She stopped by the small store and bought a few apples and then continued on her way to the barn.
Munching on one of the apples, she stepped into the dim light of the barn. She paused and breathed deep the smell of horses, hay and sweet grain. This was home for JJ. She finished her apple and tossed it into a trash can. Then with the other two apples in hand, JJ made her way to the pair of stalls on the back left wall. She whistled low and two blazed faces looked up at her. “Good morning guys. How are you?” The pair whinnied and JJ laughed as she scratched first the red muzzle of Raina and then the black one of Eagle. Raina snorted and leaned over the door of her stall. JJ laughed, she knew the mare had smelled the apples. Chuckling, she pulled the one out of her pocket and offered it to Raina, the mare snatched it and immediately retreated to the back of her stall to enjoy her apple in peace. Eagle, watching Raina, nickered at JJ and she merely smiled, “Yeah, I have one for you too you big oaf.” JJ said jokingly as she pulled out the second apple and gave it to the black stud. “I’m going to get your tack and your grooming supplies guys, then we’re going to work in you guys’ disciplines. Sound like a plan?” The horses neighed as JJ turned from the stalls and headed for the tack room.
On her way though, she saw another woman, sitting between two stalls with stallions in them. Hmm, I wonder who this could be. JJ thought as she stepped off course and headed toward the woman. “Good morning. I’m Jordyn Massat, although, everyone calls me JJ. I’m not used to seeing another person in the barns this early. It’s a bit surprising.” JJ said with a gentle chuckle, then appraised the two studs a moment. “They are really beautiful. Are they yours?” She asked genuinely curious of the two studs. She only knew of Eagle being the only stallion in the barns.

] She watched her boys with pride in them. They had the most heart she had ever seen. She saw Charlie take a special interest with the halter. He had always been one to finish his breakfast first. She saw him bite a bit at the checkered halter placed in his stall. It was brown in the background and then had white diamond shapes all over it. She had only payed ten dollars for it so, even though it was new, it wasn't too dishartening when she saw the stallion pick it up and drop it on the ground. He then stepped on it with one hoof and looked down at it like it was a dead snake or something. Dakoda laughed a little at Charlie. She would buy him a better halter as soon as he was trained to wear one because she didn't want a thirty dollar halter being dropped on the ground and stepped on by her three year old. He picked it up again and dropped it again, seeing it as not being a threat, he then ignored it and stuck his head out.
She then looked at her chestnut arabian who was sniffing at the green halter that Dakoda had purchased for him but, not daring to touch it. For this she was a bit thankful because she had to pay a bit more for that one because he was an arabian and needed a special halter to fit him properly. She did not want to train him with one that didn't fit or made him uncomfortable. It was a 3/4 inch, adjustable chin and throat snap halter and it was by weaver! It had quality nylon and non-rusting brass rings. It had box stitching at stress points and of course would look darling on him.
She felt bad purchasing it for double what she payed for Charlie's but, Bear was an Arabian and needed it. She planned on purchasing Charlie was fancier halter once he was halter broken. Believe me, Dakoda wouldn't have purchased a twenty dollar halter for a horse that wasn't broken to wear one if she didn't have to.
He was curious about it but, didn't want to touch it other than maybe with his nose. Then, she heard the bard door open again. That's weird..I didn't think there would be anyone else here this early. She didn't pay much attention to the noise and she couldn't see who it was obviously. She assumed it was either the manager or just another boarder like herself. She wanted to groom her boys but, they weren't used to that either and they weren't trained to stand in a cross tie. She didn't want them breaking cross-ties. She had only purchased these horses a few weeks ago and neither of them had been trained much.
She had actually met with Charlie's original owners after she had purchased him and they had told her that he had been introduced to having a halter on and he could be led around but, Dakoda wanted to be sure. Sometimes owners think that their horse has been halter broken or that because they have had it on their face once means that they will be okay with it all the time. But, if what they said had been true then she would probably buy him a nicer halter by the end of this week and she could start breaking him to ride. His kind, brown eyes seemed to be looking into her soul.
Then, she head boots coming down the isleway. She turned to see a bleach blonde woman coming her way. Her cowboy boots looked like they had been around for a while but, that they had been taken care of. She introduced herself as Jordyn Massat. Good morning to you too, I'm Dakoda Bradshaw. She smiled at the blonde. You can call me Koda or Kodes if you want. Most people called her either one of those nicknames. When she got called "Dakoda" it sounded like she was in trouble. Yeah, I wasn't expecting anyone else to be here either. She gently chuckled with JJ. It was nice to meet someone friendly. She then complimented her boys. It made Dakoda smile, she always loved it when people noticed them. Yeah they're mine. The arabian's name is Bear and then the quarter horse is Charlie. She was beeming with delight in her boys and that someone had indeed noticed their beauty. Who are your horses? She was sure that she hadn't heard of them since she had only been here for a few days but, she might have walked passed their stalls while she had gotten lost looking for things.

[/sizJJ smiled as the woman introduced herself to her. “Pleasure to meet you Koda.” She said with a smile, it turned out that both of them were used to being the only ones in the barns this early. JJ just caught her smile as she asked about the stallions. Yeah they're mine. The arabian's name is Bear and then the quarter horse is Charlie. JJ smiled as she looked at each boy in turn. It looked like Koda was looking at halter breaking them. How interesting, JJ remembered doing that with her pair too…and now with her Rescue horse over at New Hope, it was a challenge.
But it was a challenge that didn’t give JJ too much trouble. She heard Koda speaking again and listened to her. She wanted to know which horses JJ had. JJ gave a bright smile. “I have the black Hanoverian-Thoroughbred stallion named Eagle, and the red dun Quarter Horse mare Raina, I had them put on the back left wall of the barn. I was actually just headed to the tack room to get their grooming supplies and tack.” JJ told her with another smile as she leaned against one of the poles holding up the roof of the barn. “Then I have a third one, over at New Hope, her name’s Destyn, she’s a blue roan crossbreed, and I’m thinking she might be American Paint and Arabian…she was an abuse case so we don’t know for sure, I’ve been working on getting her used to humans again for the past week. She’s been making great progress.” JJ told her with a half-shrug and a soft laugh as she looked at Koda again. “I was just about to take the pair out and work them in their disciplines, you’re welcome to join me if you’d like.” JJ told her as she pushed off the wall and stretched a little.
“Actually I want to get them groomed first…Eagle likes to get as dirty as he can overnight. He was glossy when I left last night.” JJ said with a laugh as she started back down the aisle to the tack room to get her horses’ brushes. She didn’t know whether Koda would want to accompany her or not, as JJ wasn’t sure exactly what she was planning to do with them today. She looked back and smiled again she didn’t really want to ditch Koda, but she was in a mood to work with the pair AND get to know Koda a little bit. e]

She smiled at JJ. Pleasure meeting you too JJ. It appeared as though she was going to have a morning buddy with here everyday which was nice. She seemed like a cool girl and obviously she was friendly. She looked at both of her stallions again as JJ did. Bear was still not touching the "scary" halter that she had left for him. Charlie was still ignoring the halter that he had dropped on the ground to stick his head out. He nickered at JJ when she looked at him. He loved the attention and was actually pretty affectionate as far as she could tell but, she had never been on his back before and all that affection could change in a second.
She listened again to JJ who told her about the horses that she had here. Yeah, I think I know who your horses are..I think I might have passed them while I was hopelessly lost here the other day. She laughed a bit at herself. They are georgous horses. She liked hot-blooded horses like thoroughbreds and arabians. Charlie was wonderful though and she was sure that he could keep up with Bear any day of the week. She was really happy that JJ had a quarter horse mare in the barn. Whenever she heard something like that she always thought for the future of breeding a purebred quarter horse. She was certain that Charlie would be a champion in good time so having another mare here would be very helpful when it came time to continue his lines.
JJ continued talking about another horse that she had at the rescue barn that they had here in town. Dakoda wanted to get a job there as a trainer eventually but, she had to get good enough first. She hated hearing stories about horses being abused. That's horrible, how people could do such nasty things to horses, ya know? But, its good that she's making progress She softly laughed again with JJ, not wanting this to get awkward. She then invited her to go and work horses in their disciplines. I would love too but, neither of my horses are broken enough to be ridden yet. But, I could help groom if you want? Or do other things? She got up and followed JJ down to the tack room. She liked this new friend that she was making and Koda wanted to get to know her more.
It was times like these that she wished that she could get right on training her horses, especially Charlie who may be able to work on back stuff soon. She wanted to check to see if he was really halter broken in a couple of days. Like she had thought before, just because you slap a halter on a horses face once and scare them to death doing it, doesn't mean that they are broken. If he wasn't, then she didn't want to be the one to scare him with one. Halter breaking is very, very important. It's the basis of all training. If a horse can't walk with a halter, they cant have a bridel on and they can't be ridden. They couldn't even be caught from the pasture without one. Koda learned the hard way. She had to bring both her boys in with a lead rope around their necks after chasing them for well over three hours. It would be nice to be around horses that probably weren't going to trample her or try and bite her or kick her or run away or refuse to be touched.

JJ smiled as Charlie nickered at her and she stepped a little closer, extending a hand toward him to see if she could sneak in a pat on his nose as Koda spoke again, Yeah, I think I know who your horses are…I think I might have passed them while I was hopelessly lost here the other day. They are gorgeous horses. That's horrible, how people could do such nasty things to horses, ya know? But, it’s good that she's making progress. JJ smiled. “Thanks Koda. Maybe in the next few weeks you’ll get to meet Destyn. My mare over at New Hope.” She said as they started toward the tack room.
JJ smiled again as Koda spoke once more. I would love too but, neither of my horses are broken enough to be ridden yet. But, I could help groom if you want? Or do other things? JJ nodded. “Sure thing Koda. And with two of them, it’s kinda hard to work with ‘em in their separate disciplines. Ya know what Koda? You can help me by grooming and working Raina…if you would like.” JJ said with a smile as they stepped into the tack room and JJ began rummaging through the stuff looking for her specific supplies. When she’d collected them and put them all in a bucket she smiled and handed it to Koda then grabbed her other set of brushes and put them in another bucket then she smiled and looked at Koda.
“C’mon, I’ll introduce you to them.” JJ said as she smiled at Koda and headed back to Raina and Eagle’s stalls. Giving a soft whistle from half way down the aisle she heard their answering neighs. As they got closer JJ turned to Koda. Pointing at the stall on the left she introduced Koda to Eagle and then smiled as she introduced Koda to Raina in the stall on the right. “You should be able to just enter her stall, as long as you show no form of enmity toward her, Raina will be glad to see you.” Then she unlatched Eagle’s door and stepped into his stall, setting her grooming bucket where his grain bucket normally sat and then went about beginning the long process of grooming the black stallion.

Dakoda always thought it was so cute when Charlie acted like this. He was the friendly one out of the pair of stallions and it was nice to see a glimmer of hope in that she hadn't purchased two demon horses. Not that Bear was a demon, he was just not as friendly. She watched as JJ extended her hand to rub his nose. His ears pricked forward and he pushed his muzzle into her hands. It made Koda smile.
She listened as JJ spoke again about perhaps meeting Destyn who was her mare down at New Hope. Yeah, that'd be really cool. Dakoda was used to horses like the ones that they had down at New Hope. Both of her boys probably would qualify to be boarded there but, they had a new life with her and they had and owner who rescued them.
JJ had offered to let her ride Raina, her mare. Yeah, I'd love too. She smiled. It would be nice to actually ride a horse. Even though she owned two of them, she hadn't ridden in so long she didn't even want to think about it. What discipline does she do? Koda was pretty versitile with the different sports but, she still wanted to know what she was going to be doing that morning. She was pretty good at jumping and she had done some dressage as well and she could even do some western sports so, she wasn't expecting to be suprised with something that she didn't know how to do or at least have an idea of what to do.
She continued to walk with JJ until they got to her horses' stalls. JJ told her that she should be able to just walk in to the stall, now that was something she hadn't been able to do in a while. She opened up the stall door and stepped inside. She pet the beautiful mare on the neck after setting the grooming bucket down. She began to run a curry comb over the mare to begin the grooming process.

JJ smiled as she heard Koda speak about how it would be really cool to meet Destyn then agree to help her with Raina, JJ gave a huge smile as she listened to Koda while she curried the black studs pelt, Yeah, I'd love too. What discipline does she do? JJ looked across Eagle’s back to the wall between Eagle’s and Raina’s stalls and answered her with a smile, “She’s got multiple disciplines, she reins, she cuts, she’s a team roper, a barrel racer and a trail/pleasure horse. I really want to work on her barrel racing and reining today, if you wouldn’t mind helpin’ me with that one.” JJ said as she put the curry away and getting the soft brush. I started scattering the loose hairs curried up from Eagle’s pelt and then I turned my attention on his mane and then worked my way to his tail, combing the tangles out. “This guy’s a trail/pleasure, Dressage horse and a Racer.” JJ told Koda as she pulled the last tangle out of his tail. Then she picked up the hoof pick and went to work on the stud’s hooves. Finishing up with the last one, JJ settled his saddle blanket over his back and then she picked up his saddle and settled it over his back as well. Then she grabbed his bridle and offered it to the stallion…he took it willingly.
JJ smiled and started to lead the stallion out of his stall as she looked back at Koda. “I really appreciate your help Koda.” JJ told her as she rubbed the stud’s nose. She was working on Eagle’s Dressage today. He needed a bit more work before it became as natural to him as his racing. JJ pulled his reins over his head told him to stay put and climbed into the saddle. “I’ll meet ya out in the arenas okay?” JJ asked as she started to move Eagle forward toward the doors of the barn and out toward the arenas. But she looked back at Koda with a smile.

] Dakoda nodded while she was grooming the mare's beautiful coat and JJ was telling her what disciplines that Raina did. All of them were western which would be a great change of pace for Koda. Both of her horses were destined to be english stars so, that was what she had been focusing on for the last little bit.
She enjoyed western ridding and it was always fun to ride a nice barrel horse. Koda liked horses that were a little hot and kinda touchy. Those were the most fun to ride with. Jumpers were nice too but, barrel horses had to be Koda's most favorite to ride so, she was exceptionally happy when JJ said that Raina did barrel racing. She didn't know a whole lot about reining but, she had done it a few times before.Yeah it's no problem but I do have to warn you that my reining experience is limited. She laughed a little as she grabbed a hard brush to get the hair that she had just dug up with the curry comb. There wasn't a lot there. JJ took good care of her horses.
Koda was a bit shocked when Koda told her what her stallion did. It was weird to have a trail/pleasure horse and a dressage horse and a racer all in one. Wow, that horse has a wide range of tallents. She was being sincere and she hopped that one day she could train a horse in so many different sports as Eagle had been. She got a soft brush and began smoothing the mare's coat. Then she grabbed the hoof pick and began cleaning the mare's hooves. They were also in good shape. She was scared to even think about how Bear's hooves looked like. She hadn't been able to pick them since she had purchased him which was something that needed to change.
She then grabbed Raina's western halter. She examined it and admired it. Western bridles were much fancier looking, much flashier than english bridles. English brides were either plain black or plain brown with a little variation. Koda loved english riding, she loved jumping and dressage with a passion but, she had to appreciate western riders as well. She put the bit up to the mare's mouth and she took well. She knew it would not be this easy to get a bridle on either of her boys, especially Bear.
She looked as JJ led Eagle down to the rings.Alrighty, I'll meet ya down there. She smiled at JJ as she placed Raina's saddle pad over her back. It was strange seeing western tack on a horse again. Then, she put the saddle on and tightened it to a comfortable fit and decided that she would tighten it more when they got there.
She started leading Raina down to the rings and wondered how they were going to have both horses doing completely separate things in the same ring. Unless, they were going to use different ones. Barrels themselves would take up half of one and she had seen JJ with an english saddle so, she assumed that she was working on dressage. Oh well, I'll just do whatever she tell me to, they are her horses. She thought to herself.
